Maple Refinement
Created by David Morrow in Zone 6 on 11/26/2008. David Morrow has been doing bonsai since 2000, and this regimen has 1 user currently using it.
Applicable Species: Amur Maple (Acer ginnala ), Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum ), Vine Maple (Acer circinatum ),

Development Stage: Ramification

Styling/Aftercare: new shoots and leaves are prone to sun burn, protect new shoots and leaves from hot summer sun.

Notes:

Spring/Summer Care: i like to use humidity trays under maples when it is very hot. this enables me to expose the tree to more sun than it would otherwise tolerate.

Fall/Winter Care: maples roots are very fleshy and will burst when frozen for too long. protect the roots with mulch if in an unheated area. Light is not necessary as the tree has no leaves.

Propagation Notes: air layers very easily, use a tourniquet though.

feed 1 1 1 1 1 1 1
Fertilize with high nitrogen solid (green king) from beginning of growth thru end of growth
keep fertilizing heavy during spring and summer, taper in the fall, and be sure to scrape the crud off the surface before wintering.
feed 1 1 1 1 1
Fertilize with low nitrogen liquid (fish emulsion) from after shoots harden thru end of growth
hit with fish once a month for extra boost, especially after defoliation

defoliation, from after shoots harden, thru end of growth
defoliate the tree once and only once a year. do this early enough in the year so that its not so hot that the new emerging leaves get burned. this will produce much more ramification than waiting for it naturally.
wiring   prune prune prune
Wire from before buds open thru when buds open. Check after 1 months.
use aluminum on deciduous trees as you can feel the bends better and have less chance of breaking branches.
repot   prune prune prune
Repot starting before buds open thru when buds open. Repot every 1 to 3 years.
you can drastically reduce rootball on maples. when you repot think of the nebari, pruning hard underneath the trunk cutting flat and sealing with cutpaste. this will encourage surface root extension.
